We want you fully informed

Questions we hear most often.

Grouped by topic. If you don't find your question here, please call the practice on 01 284 2570 or use our contact form.

General & first visits

Do you take new patients?
Yes — we welcome new patients at both Blackrock and Sandyford. Most new-patient appointments are available within two weeks. Book online or call 01 284 2570.
I'm very nervous. Can I be put to sleep for treatment?
Conscious sedation is available for nervous patients and longer procedures, delivered by an anaesthetist. We do not offer general anaesthetic in-clinic. Tell us at booking if anxiety is a concern — we have an experienced team for nervous patients.
Do you offer any other forms of sedation?
Yes — IV sedation for longer or more complex procedures, and oral sedation for milder cases. Both are discussed in advance.
Will I feel any pain during my treatment?
Modern local anaesthetic, careful technique and (where helpful) sedation mean most procedures are far more comfortable than patients anticipate. We work at your pace.

Hygiene & gum health

Can I get rid of gum disease?
Most cases of gum disease can be controlled and reversed with specialist hygiene treatment, sometimes combined with periodontal therapy. Earlier intervention is always easier than late.
Do you deal with patients who suffer from headaches, teeth grinding and jaw aches?
Yes. We treat TMJ-related issues with custom occlusal splints and, where indicated, refer to specialist colleagues for further investigation.
Does the clinic offer anti-snoring treatment?
Custom mandibular advancement devices are available for snoring and mild sleep apnoea, after appropriate assessment.

Veneers & cosmetic work

What veneers do you use at Seapoint Clinic?
We use lithium disilicate (e.max) and feldspathic porcelain veneers, designed and finished in our own laboratory. Composite bonding is also offered for cases where minimum tooth reduction is the priority.
Why are veneers and crowns so expensive?
Each restoration involves precise lab work by our master technicians, multiple clinical visits, and high-grade materials. Cheaper veneers exist; they're cheaper for a reason.
Will people know that I have veneers?
Done well, no. Our digital smile design process lets us preview the result with you before we commit to anything, so you can sign off on a result that suits your face.
Will I have sensitivity from veneers?
Some short-term sensitivity is normal in the first weeks. Long-term sensitivity is uncommon when the work is properly fitted.
If I had gum disease before veneers, will I still get it?
Veneers don't cause gum disease, but they don't protect against it either. Ongoing hygiene and regular reviews are essential.
Can I remove my veneers?
Porcelain veneers are bonded permanently. Composite bonding can sometimes be reversed. We'll always discuss what's reversible and what isn't before treatment.
Can veneers be used to replace missing teeth?
Veneers cover existing teeth — they're not used to fill gaps. For missing teeth we'd typically recommend an implant or bridge.
How long do veneers normally take?
A typical veneer case takes 2–3 visits over a few weeks: planning & design, preparation, then fitting.
Are veneers difficult to clean?
No — brush and floss as normal. Hygiene visits should continue every 6 months.
What if I get hit in the face?
Veneers are durable but not indestructible. A heavy impact can crack them; a mouthguard is recommended for contact sport.
What is a crown?
A crown covers the entire tooth (rather than just the front, like a veneer). It's used to restore a tooth that's heavily damaged, after root canal, or to anchor a bridge.

Orthodontics & children

What is the best age for braces, and why does early evaluation matter?
A first orthodontic assessment around age 7 lets us spot developmental issues early and plan when (or if) treatment is needed. Most fixed-brace treatment happens between 10 and 14, but adults are increasingly common — Invisalign and short-term braces have changed expectations.

Surgery

Do you carry out extractions and wisdom tooth removal?
Yes — both routine and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth. More complex cases are sometimes referred to a specialist oral surgeon.
